Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies….Delicious Does Not Describe

Sometimes, when I get into the test kitchen, it’s not pretty.

Then are times like these. Where in the middle of watching Tru Blood I begin to wonder how certain food combinations make work and I must attempt it and the outcome is sheer beauty,. Ferran Adria-ish like creativity, okay well I’ll not go that far, but certainly out of the mold.

I bring you the ultimate chocolate chip cookie, the Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Of course, AFTER I made the little temptresses I googled to see if I had finally found my million dollar ticket. The new Mrs. Field’s fortune pre-bankruptcy. My road to Oprah-style money, but I hadn’t. Apparently some fancy chocolatier has been making bacon chocolate bars, while another breakfast dude has been topping cookies with bacon for some time. DAMNIT!

But I’m going with it. I’m gonna hold the crown until someone else rips it out of my cold, dead hands.

Do you see that little red piece of crunchy, yummy bacon?

The salty, crisp bacon is MAGIC with the sweet chocolately cookie. Perfection. I recommend NOT eating these straight from the oven as you will not stop.

Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies
Makes 2 1/2 dozen *Must refrigerate for storage

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups 60% Cocoa Bitter-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
10-12 slices Smoked Bacon, cooked to a crisp and then finely chopped

PREHEAT oven to 375° F.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Add chopped, cooked Bacon and mix for 1 minute. Stir in morsels. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

    Deb: as I was concocting this, I almost thought maybe I should just make a little because lord knows I have made some duds. Sure glad I didn’t! The saltiness of the bacon pairs perfectly with the chocolate and butteriness of the cookie.

    I’m not quite so adventurous with flavor combinations. Once, at a young age, my dad made green eggs. He told me that he wished he could make green ham, too, so that I could have green eggs and ham.

    The green eggs where … well, something that tempted my digestive system to work in reverse.

    The scrambled eggs has Roquefort dressing in them. He reasoned that I liked both the eggs and the Roquefort and that they’d go well together.

    He was wrong.

    I too tried the Vosages bacon chocolate bar. I won it in Avitable’s giveaway. Loved it! The flavor was chocolate bar and smoky bacon, perfectly balanced. These cookies sound amazing and I will be making them on Friday.

    I tried the bacon chocolate bar… on a dare really… and I was really surprised by how good it was. The “cookiness” of the cookie (is that a word, or do I need more coffee?) would probably be even better for the bacon - a little less strange on the palate, but still delicious.

    I’m in the process of baking these cookies right now, and the first batch didn’t rise, so i was wondering if you meant a teaspoon of baking powder instead of baking soda?

    I do wanna add that they taste fantastic! just curious about the baking soda/ baking powder thing.

    Nick: Nope, baking soda is right. I like a thinner, crunchier cookie, so I use baking soda with no baking powder; however, if you like them a little plump add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and reduce the baking soda down to a 1/2 teaspoon.

  21. this is so weird, i totally saw this (or was it bacon brownies?) on another blog and my jaw dropped. it dropped b/c i was so shocked that i couldn’t imagine anything more delicious! what a creative and brilliant combo! these looks awesome.

    if you gave this to a friend and didn’t tell them what was in it, could they tell it was bacon? or would they not be able to put their finger on it?

    I made bacon chocolate chip cookies for Christmas last year. I try to work bacon into every food item possible (and drink as well… bacon infused vodka makes the best Bloody Mary!!) The cookies are delicious, but not as delicious as my current favorite recipe, Suicide Tart. This started out at Suicide Pie, which is basically a chocolate chip pecan pie with a pound of crispy cooked thick cut bacon added (chopped) and about half a cup of whiskey or rum. The salty smokey flavor of the bacon offsets the sweetness of the pie very nicely. But still, it is a bit rich for my taste, so I went with a thick shortbread crust and a little less filling and made it into Suicide Tart, which I find to be perfect. I am going to try the tart version in a cookie bar form for a party on Friday.

    Bacon… it isn’t just for breakfast anymore!

    My husband made these at work yesterday. 27 out of the 30 were adored. I liked the one he brought me home. The crispy bacon adds a nice texture and the fat makes the cookie a bit richer.

    Lorian: I prefer the smoked variety, it just gives another level of flavor.Pancetta will work, though. The salty and sweet play off eat other.

    Made these today, with walnuts added because why the heck not. :P I used thick-sliced smoked bacon and didn’t cook it super-crispy or chop it TOO fine — I like chewy bacon and chewy cookies, so putting one inside the other seemed a good bet. Thanks for the recipe!
